How Does Mobile Search Behavior Work?

There’s no denying it – mobile search is on the rise. Here’s how it works, and how you can capitalize on it.

You know it’s happening because you do it yourself. How many times do you whip out your smartphone so you can find what you want – now?

Let’s see if you’re a part of these major local mobile search trends:

  1. Searches that Include “Near me,” “Closest,” and “Nearby” Have Skyrocketed

How much? An amazing amount, actually. “Near me” searches have grown 34 times since 2011, according to Google Trends data from Mach 30, 2015. Not surprisingly, 80% come from smartphone users.

According to the SignPost blog, this means you need to get uber-present on Yelp because that’s what Apple’s Siri voice recognition integrates into its search results. Yelp reviews will show too, so it’s important to make your business as good as possible.

And, Google Now searches Google+ by default. So you want your profile and reviews set up there. But if you’re not setup on Google+, Google simply displays search results, which lessens the likelihood of sales.

  1. 50% of Consumers that do a Local Search on Their Smartphone Visit the Store Within a Day

And 18% of them buy within a day, according to research from Google. Just 7% of those who do non-local searches buy within a day. And 4 in 5 consumers want you to deliver them custom ads for their immediate surroundings. And 72% of smartphone users visit a store within 5 miles from their location.

So when you run PPC campaigns, you should use location extensions and bid adjustments to customize ad experiences and to control costs.

  1. Online Reviews will Be Critical to Your Future Success

They’re already important for your organic search rank. But it’s going to be critically important that they’re positive because they act as “social proof” for other searchers.

4.0 stars makes you look pretty attractive to searchers. 4.5 sets you apart from 99% of other businesses. And 4.8 – 4.9 makes you among the best of the best.

It’s tempting to falsify or manipulate the reviews. Let go of the urge to do so. You’ll eventually get caught and get a rankings penalty.

Here are 3 ways to get more:

If you do those things, you’ll be in prime position for dominating your local mobile search market now and in the future.
